  16. The theme of most heraldic writers seems to be that heraldry as we know it 
  17. didn't come into existence until after the preaching of the first crusade at 
  18. the end of the eleventh century.  (Hence, I assume, the start-date for 
  19. Tadgh's preferred definition of period.)
