  11.         We can see pretty clearly here that it is -not- up to the Crown to
  12. decide if a person may or may not be a Master of Arms or a Knight. Such a
  13. choice is up to the person being offered the Belt.
  14.         But is it "period," to have a Peer that does not swear fealty? 
  15. In the context of medieval legal thought as applied to the SCA, the answer 
  16. seems to be an unqualified "Yes!"
  17.         First of all: look at the oaths that are taken when the Peerages are 
  18. given in Atenveldt:

  23.      indicated your willingness to accept the noble Order of 
  24.      Knighthood in the Society for Creative Anachronism. Having

  27.      of Atenveldt, honor and defend all ladies and those weaker 
  28.      than yourself, give courtesie to your Peers, both Knight, 
  29.      and Master of Arms, and Masters and Mistresses of the Laurel 
  30.      and Pelican, and conduct yourself in all matters as befits a 
  31.      knight, drawing your sword only for just cause and being 
  32.      chivalrous to all to the greater glory of yourself and the 
  33.      Crown of Atenveldt?

  42.         It should be noted that the combination of the Knight's Oath and
  43. the King's response, along with the gift of the Chain, result in a liege-
  44. fealty contract.

  53.      to your Peers, to further your knowledge of the Arts of 
  54.      Peace and War, and to aid others in this pursuit. All this 
  55.      you should swear, by this Sword and by your honor.

  57.      Laurel (Pelican): Place your hands on this, the Great Sword 
  58.      of State, and swear by all that you hold sacred and true, 
  59.      that you shall henceforth conduct yourself in all ways as 
  60.      befits a Peer of this Realm, to be at all times an example 
  61.      of Chivalry and Courtesie, to give honor to the Crown and 
  62.      the Kingdom, and to your Peers, both Knights and Masters of 
  63.      Arms, and Masters and Mistresses of the Pelican (Laurel) to 
  64.      further your knowledge of the Arts of Peace and War, and to 
  65.      aid others in this pursuit. All this you should swear, by 
  66.      this Sword and by your honor.

  71. their chosen field. This is a "service" contract prima facie. They take what 
  72. amounts to an -oath of service.- Also, the Peerage cannot even be -offered- 
  73. if the person has not shown obedience to Kingdom Law and respect for the 
  74. Crown:
