- Unto Boris and the others here gathered
- doth Joseph d'Aquitaine send greetings!
-
- Boris, I take exception with some of your statements.
- Those of us who assist the College of Arms (or are members of it) find
- heraldry great fun too. Yes, we profess anachronism, but it's by striving
- to introduce the medieval into the modern. SCA heraldry, to the best of
- my knowledge, has as its goal to *enhance* the medieval experience; thus
- was codified the expectation that armory with "strictly out of period" elements
- would be rejected if they came up for registration.
-
-
- I work on the computerized database, so the CoA can continue to
- provide the registration service, without losing more time to researching the
- submissions. We're NOT registering depictions of computers, because those
- destroy the medieval atmosphere for which we're striving.
-
- I find no hypocrisy in using modern methods off-site and behind-the-
- scenes to achieve medieval results, Boris. If I didn't know better, I'd
- think you were advocating that we all should use no modern materials, methods,
- knowledge, or thought processes in trying to form the medieval atmosphere.
- That would make gatherings as tournaments, wars, and the Rialto impossible,
- not to mention making research impossible.

-
- It's perfectly 'good' modern heraldry, but it is 'bad' medieval
- heraldry. (That, and only that, is the reason it is not registerable.) The
- closest equivalent would be a diver's helm, if they had such a thing, or a
- roundel (which preserves the general shape).
-
- Speaking as a researcher who assists a CoA commenter, if that's all
- there is to it, the only complain would be the modernity of the astronaut's
- helm, and maybe the style of the stars and nova. Modify it slightly into
- something the medieval eye would understand, such as a gold or silver roundel,
- and use medieval depictions of stars.
-
- The CoA doesn't care what shape you actually display it on, though a
- hexagon would be rather a strange shape to carry into battle....
