- Good gentles, I greet you well. Two ladies asked me to send a synopsis
- of the information I gathered from the net. Unfortunately I've lost one
- lady's address. I hope that she, and others will find this information
- interesting.
-
- With each note is the SCA and mundane name of the giver was well as her/his
- e-mail address.

- Irena Turnau's article "Diffusion of Knitting in Medieval Europe" to be
- found in _Cloth and Clothing in Medieval Europe: Essays in Memory of
- Professor F. M. Carus-Wilson._ Studies in Textile History 2. N. B.
- Harte and K. G. Ponting, eds. London: Heinemann, 1983, pp. 368-389.
-
- This article discusses knitting throughout our period, including mention
- of such artifacts as "[t]he knitted leggings of Bishop Konrad von
- Sternberg (who was buried in Worms in 1192)" (Turnau, p. 380). There
- is also reference to knitted liturgical gloves from before the turn of
- the millenium.

- I know the perfect person for information. Maestra Agnese Canigiano
- (Eileen McCabe) is a laurel in knitting who does wondrous research and
- execution. (She's got a set of knit stockings done on such narrow gauge
- they're amazing.) If her e-mail address is still good, it's
- agnese@access.digex.com.

- Agnese can be reached at
- Eileen McCabe
- c/o Tom Olsen
- PO Box 2013
- Havelock NC 28532
- 919-223-6238
-
- Her old address, which should be okay, or at least have forwarding, is:
- 1322 Huntover Dr., Odenton MD 21113 410-674-BABE and her ex-roomie,
- Lady Keilyn FitzWarin, is still living there. Eileen is shuttling back
- and forth for the moment.
-
- Agnese is the most knowledgable person I can think of for period
- knitting info, although Ilaine de Cameron or Roen Dentilliere could
- probably also help. Let me know if you'd like their addresses.

- knitting is indeed period, though late. If you like knitting hats and
- gloves you are in luck, there are several examples of each of these
- extant. Hand-knit stockings are the perfect accessory but if you are
- going to do them in the proper fineness, you will be at it a while :)

- The one you want to write to about knitting is Lady Shahira Abdul Samad.
- She submitted a research paper on the history of knitting to Ice
- Dragon. Her address is: Caroline Tomczak, 1476 Main Street, Buffalo New

- there's a fun book called "A History of H and Knitting" by Richard Rutt.
- He discusses several different methods of holdi ng the needles and has
- many pictures of "period" knitted articles. Sorry I don 't have the
- ISBN but the publisher is Batsford, London and it is copyrighted 19 87.
- The call number at Farrell Library here at Kansas State University is
- TT82 0.r84 1987b.
