  21. (mikem@col.hp.com) posted here on rec.music.makers on 11 Apr 91 that

  47. This circuit doesn't create an artificial ground, rather the 1M and 500K
  48. resistors bias the portion inside the capacitors to half of the supply
  49. potential.  The 0.1 uF capacitor prevents this bias from causing a DC current
  50. in the volume pot, and the 1 uF capacitor restores the output signal to 0
  51. volts DC.

  53. Note that this is a noninverting voltage follower with a voltage gain of 1,
  54. or 0 dB.
