  13. TOP-NOTCH (I'd buy a ticket to hear them conduct just about anything,
  14.       and whatever they conduct, it's assuredly NOT run-of-the-mill):

  16. Kleiber (always worth waiting for)
  17. Giulini (seems to communicate the depth and wisdom of hard-won experience) 
  18. Rattle (occasionally suckered into recording unsuitable repertoire by
  19.         the powers-that-be at EMI, but an extraordinary talent) 
  20. Tennstedt (the most rarified air)
  21. Solti (whatever you say, he's one of the best alive)
  22. Abbado (the Bill Clinton of conducting -- happily at home in a lot
  23.         of diverse music, often with outstanding results)
  24. Sinopli (I'm a recent convert to him)
  25. Gardiner (in early music only) 
  26.  
  27. SECOND TIER:
  28. Blomstedt (limits himself to certain repertoire)
  29. Jarvi (spreads himself too thin)
  30. Colin Davis (rather non-individual)
  31. Dohnanyi (too "hard-nosed" to my ears in too much repertoire)
  32. Levine (excellent and adaptable to many styles and genre of music)
  33.  
  34. THIRD TIER:
  35. Slatkin (but climbing -- quite an Elgarian, and excellent in American music)
  36. Ashkenazy (overrated by a fawning British press; homogenized sound)
  37. Previn (ditto, but more truly talented than Ashkenazy)
  38. Andrew Davis (gets more attention than he deserves)
  39. Barenboim (although some of his later stuff is encouraging)
  40.  
  41. VERY PROMISING:
  42. Schwarz (excellent in American music and unusual repertoire)
  43. Salonen (a few hits, a few misses)
  44.  
  45. NOT:
  46. Tilson Thomas (potential forever unrealized)
  47. Ozawa (ditto)
  48. Mehta (ditto)
  49. Maazel (potential? what potential?  when he does something marvelous,
  50.         like his Mahler Fourth, I dismiss it as a lucky guess)
  51. Boulez (a stinker; as a friend of mine says, "We hate him"; his
  52.         conducting is so unfeeling I think he needs counseling)
