  18. Apparently the practice of foot-fighting arose among the rougher elements
  19. of French society around 1800, for reasons that are unclear; around 1820,
  20. someone whose name I disremember systematized this practice.  Later, other
  21. elements were added, particularly from boxing.

  23. So Savate isn't particularly old, though it's amusing to contemplate that
  24. it provably predates any number of arts that sometimes make claims of
  25. great antiquity.  Not mentioning any names...
