-
- Your notions about the effects of registering a business name are
- misconceived.
-
- Whether you carry on business is COMPLETELY unrelated to whether you
- register a business name. Only the former is relevant for purposes
- of determining what expenses you can claim for income tax purposes.
-
- I assume you're not talking about incorporating, which is a much
- more involved and expensive process than registering a business name.
- Incorporating will create a corporation that has a separate legal
- existence from you, and you would be its shareholder. Registering
- a business name (for $50) is simply advising the world, through the
- office of the Ministry of Consumer and Commercial Relations, that
- if anyone comes across "SDFINUCA Consulting", it's really just Sean
- Finucane carrying on business under that name. That's all that
- registering accomplishes.
-
- The one side effect that registering may help you with, for tax
- purposes, is that your clients may be more willing to treat you
- (under your business name) as an independent consultant rather than
- as an employee. The difference is purely psychological, however; if
- you're an independent consultant (as determined by the law), you're
- an independent consultant whether you use your own name or some
- made-up business name.
-
- As to juggling, that's a separate business from computer consulting,
- obviously. If you have a reasonable expectation of profit, then
- subject to various restrictions, you can deduct the expenses of the
- business. And, of course, you needn't pick the same year-end that
- applies to your consulting business.
-
- Anyone who has a significant amount of business income should
- obtain professional advice to make sure they pay only the minimum
- amount of tax legally required of them. There are a number of
- ways to arrange one's affairs to help reduce and defer tax.
