  15. Oh, OK!  See, I had always heard that they came from the Joke 
  16. Fairy(even the homophobic ones), who is a sprite-like creature, 
  17. born during the Golden Age of Greece, who travels the world, 
  18. recycling the three original jokes.  What I heard happens is, 
  19. TJF(The Joke Fairy) started out with 3 jokes(the one about the 
  20. traveling salesman and the farmer's daughter, the one about the 
  21. guy who walks into a bar, and the original dumb blonde joke) from 
  22. Greece and travelled to Troy and told them to some locals.  Then 
  23. he went to each country, in turn, retelling the joke, without 
  24. embellishment or variations of any kind(he is, after all, TJF).  
  25. As his travels eventually brought him back to his point of origin, 
  26. he would tell the jokes again and someone would tell him three 
  27. similar jokes they had heard recently(actually, they were the same 
  28. three jokes, but modified greatly as a result of the 
  29. "whisper-down-the=lane phwnomenon).  He then took these new jokes 
  30. and made the rounds again... and again... adding to the world's 
  31. arsenal of humor.  Well, as the number of countries and the size 
  32. of the civilized world, grew, so did the variations on the three 
  33. original jokes, being modified by temperment, ethnic variety and 
  34. the current state of world politics and other global conditions.  
  35. This also explains why there are so few "Dark Ages" jokes.  As an 
  36. aside, most of the "jewish-joke" variations come from Western 
  37. Europe, while the Dumb blonde variants come mainly from Southeast 
  38. Asia.  The "Why did the chicken cross the road?" variety stems 
  39. from the African Continent and, as you all probably already know, 
  40. Knock-knock jokes originated in Poland, but nobody understood 
  41. them, so Czechoslovakia(sp?) usually got the credit.  But, you're
  42. saying this isn't how it actually happened, huh?  Oh, well, I 
  43. guess I should've realized it was just a story when I learned the 
  44. truth about Santa Claus<G>.
