  11. Ok, I really loved the idea of worm composting and when I remodeled my
  12. kitchen resolved to have a wormbin instead of garbage disposall.
  13. (If you want amusement, watch the look that comes onto a contractor's
  14. face when you tell him you don't want a garbage disposall, you want a 
  15. wormbin.)

  17. So I got a plastic foam lidded box that a friend had available (shipping
  18. crate from some mail order frozen steak company).  I burned airholes into
  19. its sides with a heated screwdriver.  I filled it about five inches deep
  20. with potting soil.  Bought about 150 redworms to put into it.  Tossed
  21. in my kitchen scraps.

  23. About 3 weeks later, I decided to look more closely, to see how all this
  24. rotting garbage was coming along.  And found bugs.  They seemed to be
  25. crawling versions of those nasty little black flies.  I started thinking
  26. about the possibility of attracting cockroaches.  The wormbin ended up 
  27. outdoors, just outside my back door.  And then when I was out of town it
  28. rained and flooded my wormbin and my worms drowned.

  30. I would like to try again, once everything dries out to moderate moisture.
  31. Is there any way, keeping the wormbin indoors, to prevent unwanted bugs?
  32. (The people who have posted about wormbinning seem all to come from 
  33. cold climates, such as Canada, so maybe the bugs problem is strictly a
  34. warm-climate problem).  If the problem is universal, or if anyone else
  35. has dealt successfully with this problem, please post or at least
  36. email me at ramirez@math.ucla.edu

  38. I really love the idea of wormbins (even though worms make rather boring
  39. pets. :-) ).  I would like to keep my worms indoors since it is a
  40. flight of stairs to the outside and I am lazy.  Thanks in advance.
