- Hi all! The wet, heavy snow we got last week caused some
- severe tree damage in my area. We had about a dozen trees
- snap off at the tops or loose significant branches. Most
- of these were pines, but a few oaks and birch were lost
- also.
-
- One tree presents a particular problem for me. A pink
- flowering dogwood that occupied a prominent place in our
- front landscaping was literally split in pieces. The spreading
- habit made the tree hold snow until it split right down the
- main trunk, in four major pieces. Looks a little like lightning
- hit it directly down the center.
-
- So is there anything we can do to salvage this valuable tree?
- I've considered bolting the split parts together and sealing the
- tree as best I can. Alternatively, I thought I could just try
- to save the biggest section, pruning the rest away. I'd rather
- not do that, because it would destroy the symetry of the tree.
-
- So any ideas about how to save the tree, or at least try? Should
- salvage be attempted soon, or after it warms up? Any help would
- be appreciated, as replacing a 20 foot dogwood sounds very expensive.
-
- Thanks.
