- Instructions to Read the MGT Files on Go Seigen's Games
-
- If you save these instructions, you can skip them when I post them with the
- next game. If any changes in these instructions are made, I will inform the
- readers.
-
- Instructions:
-
- 1. Display program. The file was edited with mgt, and users are preferred
- to read it with mgt. SmartGo for Macintosh might read the board, but the
- commentary area would be difficult to follow. Mgt can be obtained from the
- site u.washington.edu via ftp.
-
-
- 2. Commentary. All comments were made by Go Seigen 9 dan (first in
- Japanese, then translated to Chinese, and now to English) except --
-
- a. The notes made by original Japanese editor, Mr. Katsumoto
- Tesshuu. Mr. Katsumoto often introduces some background
- information at the beginning of a game, and some commentary
- on the moves towards the end, when Go Seigen 9 dan tends to
- comment less. Mr. Katsumoto's notes are inclosed by "(*"
- and "*)."
-
- b. The notes made by mgt editor (that's me :). Most of his
- notes are directions to read through the variations,
- coordinates of some important points (to emphasize), and,
- occasionally, his fussy thoughts.:) His notes are inclosed
- by square brackets, "[" and "]."
-
- Also, throughout the file, Go Seigen is replaced by "Wu" when only his last
- name, "Go", is mentioned. This is to avoid the confusion between his name
- and the name of this game (in English).
-
- A note to fast readers: Some of the comments on one move occupies more than
- one "page." Please check if there is a "+" sign at about the lower left
- corner of a commentary section. If there is, use 'k' (lower case) to do
- "pagedown", and 'i' (lower case) is for "pageup." This is sometimes very
- important.
-
-
- 3. Variations. There are two types, variations and references, and the
- differences between them are not important. When there is a branch leading
- to a variation, the mgt editor will always inform you (he's not afraid of
- being redundant here) with a statement like "[*** type 'B' to see a
- variation]." NOTE: that is a CAPITAL B; lower-case 'b' won't work!
-
- The user can then go to that branch, fearlessly advance, until he/she sees
- "[*** end of variation]." He/she will then be instructed by "[*** type '['
- to get back to main branch.]" or "[*** type 'g113' to get back to main
- branch.]" (this time, in the latter, it's a lower-case 'g'). Note that
- typing a '[' will always work (getting back to main), while 'g' (for
- "goto") is only a suggestion by the mgt editor to keep a "fluency." In case
- a user accidentally missed a "stop sign" (***'s) and has gone one node or
- two too far, he/she could just go backwards one move or two to find the
- "stop sign."
-
-
- 4. Mgt file. It's big comparing to normal mgt files. Some most kibitzed
- games on IGS are of only about half or one third the size. However, I
- don't think it's big enough to cause any trouble to save it from the
- newsgroup. If such problem does exist, or if someone missed a game but
- wants to have it, he/she can obtain the mgt file via e-mail from me
- (jzy@casbah.acns.nwu.edu). Also, in the future, I believe, people should
- be able to get these games from ftp@u.washington.edu.
-
-
- 5. Mistakes and drawbacks. I don't believe this work is perfect. Mistakes
- are unavoidable and drawbacks must exist. Any criticism and suggestions
- are welcome and greatly appreciated. Again, jzy@casbah.acns.nwu.edu.
-
-
- Yours truly,
- Jim Zijian Yu
