- Okay. I entered the PostXmas Hold 'Em Tournament at the Oaks
- Club in emeryville. $210 Buy-in for $500 in chips, no
- re buys. Pays Top Four: 50, 25, 15, 10.
-
- Ended up being 76 players at 7 tables. Blinds started at
- 10-20, doubling every 25 minutes. After the blinds went
- to 40-80 there was a break at which point there were five
- tables remaining. During this time I did some MAJOR
- sucking out incl: Raising 6-8suited under the gun and
- hitting the spade draw with a gut shot. Hurt a KQsuited
- who had flopped top pair with a runnerrunner flush draw
- Stuff like that. Called an all-in bet when I was in the big blind
- (since it was only a couple more chips). I had 10-2off.
- Flop came 10-10-3. Gee. Did the same thing with A2off vs
- AK, flop came 8-8-2.
-
- But here's the story. A player nicknamed Hercules(no idea
- why), who is, I think, a decent player, was in a 5-way
- pot preflop and on the button. Flop comes J-7-2 with
- two diamonds. Check. Check. Check. Bet. Hercules calls.
- First checker raises. Everyone folds except Hercules.
- Turn: Jack of Hearts. First guy reaches for his chips
- then looks over at Hercules. Check. Hercules fires.
- First guy calls. (Now, hm, who do you think has
- what?) Next card comes, a Six of Spades. No help. First
- guy checks, Hercules fires, first guy calls. Hercules
- calls out "Ace High." (was shooting for the diamond
- flush) first guy turns over pocket 7s. At this point
- Hercules is nearly all in, and the blinds are at
- 160-320. There are a mere 3 tables left and judging
- from the stacks at all other tables, I'm about in
- 3rd place. Okay, at some point I lose a bit of
- ground on cheese: K10off(Be very afraid...) but
- not because of kicker problems, but because of
- 23suited. Live by the cheese, die by the cheese. So
- finally it's down to 2 tables and we are playing
- a 3-6 game in lime chips. After the K10 I'm no
- longer a favorite.
-
- We condense yet further to two tables. One of the
- first hands, Hercules goes all in with two
- chips. Next guy raises. Three callers, all
- of them all in as well. Three different
- pots. Flop comes J-J-10. Turn: 10. River: Blank.
- Hercules turns over A-10. The other hands
- were: QQ, AK, KK, AKsuited. So he gains
- some ground.
-
- After those fellows disappear, I use A9 to put
- another guy all in and he leaves. At last we are
- down to the last table.
-
- I'm not real happy with the situation. During the
- 3-6 round I call a raise in the big blind with
- 76off figuring I have no competition. I was
- right, but still hit nothing. Hercules continues
- to build, "stealing" blinds(but with good
- hands) and then flopping a set of queens and
- going all in on the turn. Of course he
- wins.
-
- The blinds go up to 6-12 as I'm in the little
- blind. I call with Q7 clubs. one club
- on the flop, bye bye Q7.
-
- There are nine players at the table as the blinds
- bear down on me and I get AK under the gun.
- Pump. Everyone folds until Hercules who is in
- the small blind and he makes in enough to put me
- all in. Flop comes 10-4-3 all off suit and although
- I know I'm an underdog, assuming he would reraise
- with any pocket pair and AK only, he seals any
- doubt by turning over pocket 10s.
-
- End of story. Although I did some major sucking
- out, I couldn't help but be bitter that that
- one guy didn't put Hercules all in with his
- pocket 7s. Would have changed things dramatically.
