-
- OK, this post serves two purposes:
-
- 1. An attempt to answer the original question.
- 2. To demonstrate that there are women who post to this group - this one
- simply hasn't had the time, etc. lately. (Nice to see all the "new" names,
- though!)
-
- For those new to this group, my primary interest is WSD (Modern Western Square
- Dancing) and round dancing. I've also had experience with ballroom, contra,
- and IFD (in varying degrees).
-
- Why dance? Plainly and simply put, it's something I enjoy doing. It took
- awhile to realize this though...
-
- My initial exposure to square dancing (like many of us) came via those few
- weeks in gym class that so many of us loved to hate. Being the oddball I was,
- of course I was different - I thoroughly enjoyed it. For one thing, it was
- probably the only thing in gym in which I could be considered competent. It
- was many years, however, before I could do anything "serious" about it. In the
- meantime, I enjoyed what littel experience I was able to get - those gym
- classes, 4-H parties (alas, no time/transportation to join the local 4-H square
- dance club), and "hi-los" offered by Rutgers Promenaders in my first two years
- of college.
-
- After my father died during my sophonmore year, I concluded that life was too
- short not to do what one really wanted, so I decided I would do two things in
- junior year:
-
- 1. Take square dance lessons (which I did 1st semester).
- 2. Join the campus radio station (which I did 2nd semester).
-
- Lessons proved to be a sanity-saver and offered the opportunity to meet an
- entirely new set of people. Little did I realize in 12/75 what else dancing
- would do for me:
-
- - Enable me to meet my husband.
- - Travel to places across the US I'd never consider for vacations.
- - Meet a variety of folks from many different walks of life - in person or
- via e-mail (or both!).
- - Discover other talents within myself - including sewing, public relations
- skills, management skills - that might not have surfaced otherwise.
-
- Yet, all these years and experiences later, the bottom line remains:
- I like to dance because it's fun!
-
- And so it goes...
