- : Proposal
- : Decision: Should Arabian Purebred Mares be allowed to have more than
- : one foal that can be registered with the Arabian Horse
- : Registry per calender year?
-
- : (Presumably via a special permit embryo transfer arrangement)
-
- One of the greatest risks come from one issue. Embryo transfer is not
- cheap. Add the cost of a permit and it is even more expensive. This
- effectively means that only those breeders with plenty of money will do it
- regularly. In all probability, you will have a skewed representation of
- bloodlines, and those mares will probably be the get of some of the
- overbred stallions.
-
- Who decides what bloodlines are desireable? That is often a matter of
- fad. Remember it wasn't that long ago that looks were everything.
-
- Promoting more interest in the breed would be better served by more public
- relations which promoted the Arabian as an all around horse. The breed
- has an unfortunate reputation for being flighty, hard to deal with and a
- "beauty contest" horse. My experience has been the opposite, but people
- are often shocked to find that Sterling is an Arabian. He doesn't fit
- their expectations as he is a calm, 15.2h, moderate headed dressage horse
- (with a pulled mane!). A large nuber of Arabians are working as pony
- hunters, but most of the time their breed is not discussed. I find this a
- sad state of affairs.
-
- While I do think that some embryo transfer should be allowed, perhaps
- limiting the number of foals in a year, I also feel that the number of
- foals a stallion may produce should be limited. No one bloodline is
- likely to be the salvation of a breed.
