- A Horsey New Year to All!
-
- I am on the board of directors of the US Lipizzan Registry and
- we've been getting some inquiries from folks who want to
- register their half-Arab, half-Andalusian as Lipizzans. Since
- we've gotten a number of inquiries, this (mis-)information must
- be coming from some widely available source. Has anyone heard
- that an Arab+an Andalusian=Lipizzan???
-
- To set the record straight, the USLR only registers horses that
- have a five generation pedigree of Lipizzans from the established
- lines (Favory, Pluto, Conversano, Neopolitano, Maestoso, Siglavy,
- and Tulipan). They will register as a half
- Lipizzan, a horse with one purebred parent. Contrary to popular
- belief, Lipizzans are not derived from Andalusians--these breeds
- have some common ancestors. And although the Lipizzan has some
- Arab blood (as do many modern breeds) the breed has been established
- for 400 years.
-
- I sincerely hope that folks have not been misled into breeding
- their Arabs to Andalusians or vice versa thinking that they'd
- have a registerable Lipizzan foal (although I'm sure that makes
- a nice cross). I would expect that the foal would be registerable
- as a half-Arab--I don't know if the Andalusian registry accepts
- half-bred or part-breds.
-
- I'd appreciate any tips on how this rumor started. I'd also be
- happy to answer any questions anyone has about Lipizzans. For
- more information, write:
