- Hello,
-
- My Grandfather recently passed away and left me his coin collection.
- I've come across a "Hoover Dam Memorial" medal in his collection that
- I can't seem to find any information about. I was hoping someone might
- be able to tell me something about it.
-
- The piece is a medal of slightly larger diameter and thickness than a
- morgan dollar, and although it LOOKS like gold it seems too light to
- me to be solid gold. The obverse has the legend: "THEY LABORED THAT
- OTHERS MIGHT SEE A BRIGHTER DAY" around the circumference and the
- obverse devices consist of two men on a scaffolding working on the dam.
- The reverse has the legend: "HOOVER DAM GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY" around the
- circumference and the reverse devices consist of a bird's eye view of
- the completed dam and the lettering: "1935 50th 1985". The coin
- has a reeded edge.
-
- What I'd like to know is whether this piece was minted at one of the U.S.
- mints, or whether it was struck privately. Also, I'd like to know the
- composition of the piece, and whether it has any numismatic value beyond
- raw bullion content. Thanks for any info you can provide,
-
