- The Coast Guard originated as "treasury cutters" and was operated as a branch
- of the Treasury Dept. for a long time, along with my two personal favorites,
- the Customs Service and the BATF. They have been, and, I believe, still are,
- responsible for the safe conduct of shipping inside US territorial waters. The
- Navy is responsible for the prosecution of war efforts and defense against
- hostile enemies (as opposed to friendly enemies :-).
-
- When the Navy was boarding ships in the Persian Gulf, it was the Coasties who
- actually went on board first. Imagine being boarded by a bunch of guys
- carrying M16A1s, shotguns and cal .50 automatic rifles. "Good morning, we'd
- like to have a look at your head, your discharge placard and the contraband in
- hold three".
