- There seem to be regular posts on the subject of chain wear. Here are my
- experiences. I commute 7 miles a day, with just over a 1000 foot of
- climbing on the return. I do this on an old MTB with a Shimano Exage
- chainset (steel chain rings), Shimano 600 rear mech, XT front mech. This
- is summer and winter riding on very dusty roads. I oil my chain when it gets
- brown. The last chain I had was a SEDIS, which I snapped about 2 months back.
- At this point the chain had covered 4000 miles and was totally 'dead' by the
- time it broke. I threw it in the trash and bought a new Shimano chain (annoying
- because of that stupid spare pin needed to break and reconnect the chain).
-
- Now I have absolutely no slippage whatsoever, changing is still super smooth,
- even with the ancient front and rear Exage indexing levers. I also figure 4000
- miles on the SEDIS (design flaws and all) is pretty good value.
-
- So what are you guys doing to your chains ? I can only assume that my lack of
- oiling helped save my chain from wear.
