-
- I have travelled extensively in Chile using Bitnet. Contrary to
- common belief, travelling in Chile via Bitnet is much easier and
- safer than travelling via the Internet. There is something about
- the compression/decompression technique used by Bitnet and the
- layout of their net that is much better suited to travelling in
- Chile than the corresponding features of the Internet.
-
- My worst experience with travelling in Chile via the Internet was sheer
- horror. The compression/decompression didn't work properly, and after
- threading myself in at the relleno.com Internet node, I emerged in Chile
- with a nose the size of my leg, one arm missing, and a third leg (from
- somebody else!) attached to my butt. It was extremely difficult to
- convince the authorities that I wasn't some kind of freak animal that
- should be shot or vivisected by lusting academicians. I finally managed
- to reverse-travel through the Internet C/D algorithm; miraculously I
- reemerged back home essentially intact. The only permanent reminder of
- that horrendous experience is my nose: it's still almost a foot long, a
- very embarassing feature.
-
- The other thing that's very important to be aware of is the spelling of
- the email address used to travel to Chile: chile@latinovm.bitnet. Do
- not key in: chili@latinovm.bitnet!! I did that once, and I wound up in
- a huge pot of boiling chili at the annual chili competition in
- Chilihuahua, Mexico. The only thing that saved me was the fact that I
- was already bundled up in my 7-layer Andean expedition gear as I had
- expected to arrive on the shores of Lago Pueyrredon at >15,000 ft.
