- The original concern of this thread was that the writer felt one
- might be tainted or morally compromised by using a device for
- recreational purposes that had its technological origin in weapons
- research. I don't propose to debate that topic in this arena, i.e.,
- wether or not such reaearch is justifiable or not, etc., etc. I
- would like to argue, however, that such a debate is somewhat
- contrived since it is nearly impossible to participate in any
- backcountry activity (or nearly any other activity!) without the use
- of some technology developed to adress a military need. Perhaps the
- the most pervasive of all is Nylon (aka Perlon) which was developed
- as a sustitute for silk and other natual fibers in WWI.
