  16. be construded as illegal.  It is provided purely for informational
  17. and amusement purposes only.

  22. Monkeywrench alone or with few and absolutely trusted partners.
  23. Keep a low profile
  24. Avoid sporting "Hayduke Lives" bumperstickers or patches or other visible
  25. emblems.
  26. Keep "Ecodefense" out of sight.
  27. Keep a closed mouth.
  28. Do not draw media attention.
  29. Avoid targeting national security-related targets or major industrial
  30. facilities.
  31. Avoid those who talk about monkeywrenching.
  32. Avoid or ostracize lunatics, advocates of violences, or immature, macho
  33. bigmouths.
  34. Minimize the use of monkeywrenching techniques that might be characterized as
  35. "violent."
  36. Avoid public statements or writing that can be construed as advocating
  37. violence.
  38. Be willing to disavow stupid acts.
  39. Avoid the use or possession of illegal drugs.

  41. Remember:
  42. Monkeywrenching is nonviolent.
  43. Monkeywrenching is not organizaed.
  44. Monkeywrenching is individual.
  45. Monkeywrenching is targeted.
  46. Monkeywrenching is timely.
  47. Monkeywrenching is dispersed.
  48. Monkeywrenching is diverse.
  49. Monkeywrenching is fun.
  50. Monkeywrenching is not revolutionary.
  51. Monkeywrenching is simple.
  52. Monkeywrenching is deliberate and ethical.

  54. Intellectual masturabation provides philosophical counters to
  55. monkeywrenching.  By checking the written literature, the reader will find
  56. all the counters to these arguments (some over 200 years old):
  57.     The destruction of property is wrong.
  58.     Breaking the law is wrong.
  59.     Current resource management is sound; these is no bioloigcal crisis;    
  60.     so monkeywrenching is unnecessary.
  61.     Monkeywrenching is undemocractic, and imposes extremist beliefs on
  62.     others. [One of the best sounding and most misguided old arguments
  63.     is the belief in "multiple-use."  It isn't.]
  64.     Monkeywrenching is a tactic of poor losers.
  65.     Monkeywrenching isn't playing fair.
  66.     Monkeywrenching threatens human being with injury or death: it is
  67.     "eco-terrorism." [Foreman says it up there.  Read it yourself.
  68.     You have just heard propaganda.]
  69.     Monkeywrenching turns one into a criminal.
  70.     Monkeywrenching leads to vandalism, disrespect for law, and the
  71.     breakdown of society.
  72.     By advocating monkeywrenching, one is liable for all excesses --
  73.     even those where someone has obviously strayed from published
  74.     guidelines.
  75.     If you monkeywrench, you should take credit for your actions
  76.     and accept punishment as one does for any act of civil disobedience.
  77.     Monkeywrenching "lowers the standards of civility another notch."
  78.     By using economic loss as a deterrent, monkeywrenchers buy into the
  79.     materialistic system.
  80.     Destroying machines is wrong.
  81.     Monkeywrenching costs jobs. [E. Abbey: "Cancer causes jobs."]
  82.     Monkeywrenching is ineffective.
  83.     Monkeywrenching give the entire environmental movement a bad name
  84.     and causes an antienvironmental backlash.
  85. Read Foreman for elaborations on all of the above.

  87. Advice from George Washington Hayduke:
  88. 1. Prepare a plan.
  89. 2. Gather intelligence.
  90. 3. Buy away from home.
  91. 4. Never tip your hand.
  92. 5. Never admit anything.
  93. 6. Never apologize; it's a sign of weakness.

  97. A couple of suggested additions to your distilled wisdom:

  99. 1. Monkeywrenching is illegal.
  100. 2. Monkeywrenching is deliberate damage to property so as to make
  101.    it unusable to various legal uses.
  102. 3. Monkeywrenching is deliberately placing the life and property of a
  103.     human being at risk. 
  104. 4. Monkeywrenching is deliberately violating the constitutional rights
  105.     of another human being (if done in the USA).
  106. 5. Monkeywrenching is an aspect of intellectual arrogance.

  108. Notes:
  109. 1. This should be obvious, given the advice of Foreman that you cite,
  110.    but you probably should clarify it.
  111. 2. This again should be obvious -- but it points up WHY
  112.    monkeywrenching is illegal.
  113. 3. "Ethical" monkeywrenchers seek to minimize the risk to life -- but
  114.    they can't escape the fact that people have been seriously injured
  115.    due to their actions. (Anyone killed yet?)
  116. 4. See "due process" and "protection of property rights" decisions of
  117.    the Supreme Court.  
  118. 5. As in "I know better than any opponent what should be done here."

  120. Conclusary note:
  121.   Even given all of the above, there may be times when Monkeywrenching
  122. is all that remains to prevent an atrocity.  But remember what happened 
  123. to the Luddites and be prepared to suffer likewise!
