  35. Just thought I'd broaden the scope of this thread.  I have a pair of 
  36. Vandersteen 3 speakers driven by a Bryston 11B preamp and a Bryston 4B 
  37. power amp interconnected with Straightwire (Laserlink?), and bi-wired 
  38. with Apature flat cable.  The CD player is a mid-fi Denon DCD-1420.

  40. I auditioned the Vandy 3's, as well as the 2Ce's, with both an Adcom 555-II
  41.  and the Bryston amplifiers.  Although I must admit I wasn't as well-tuned 
  42. to the amps as the speakers, I felt that the Bryston did a better job 
  43. driving both models of speakers throughout the dynamic range of the disc 
  44. I listened to (Beethoven's 5th Symphony by the Cleveland Orchestra, on 
  45. Telarc).  I recall that the Adcom did an admirable job, especially for the 
  46. price, but the Bryston drove the speakers more effortlessly in the loud 
  47. passages.  I haven't heard it, but the Bryston 3B should be a good lower 
  48. cost alternative to the 4B, with similar sonic characteristics.

  50. The 2Ce's themselves have a similar sound to the 3's, but the 3's go 
  51. further on the quality (ie. they have similar designs, but the 3's use 
  52. better components).  This leads to lower distortion in the midrange, 
  53. among other (in)tangible improvements.  The 3's also delve a little deeper 
  54. into the bass, but this isn't their greatest advantage (which is their 
  55. overall beautiful sound - clear, crisp, very good imaging, basically flat, 
  56. and very involving).

  58. I'm very happy with this combination, however, I'm still dying to hear the 
  59. Vandersteen's driven by a tube amp!

  61. On a final note (is that a pun?), I've seen absolutely *no* discussion on 
  62. Vandersteen 3 speakers over this newsgroup.  Has anybody auditioned or 
  63. purchased them?  I'm very interested in other opinions on these speakers 
  64. (hopefully good one's) since I'm a happy owner myself.  Does anybody have 
  65. any knowledge about the design, drivers, etc.?  Do speak out...
