- About 8 months ago I bought a system that ended up at about $8K.
-
- Thiel 3.5's, B&K upper end electronics, Cal Audio Labs Icon II cd player.
-
- I auditioned the stuff on classical and bluesy traditional jazz with lots
- of soulful sax.
-
- Thiels were intended from the beginning, and I planned to by NAD electronics
- and cd machine, which the stereo guy (small upper end shop, mostly by
- appointment) said ought to be satisfactory, even though other stuff was better.
-
- At his insistance, i auditioned the cal audio machine - i had thought it would
- make no difference. my 29 year old son was with me - good thing, 'cause i would
- have doubted my sanity otherwise. The difference was like night and day.
- Once having heard my auditioning music on the cal audio, the nad sounded
- awful - muddy, muffled, no clarity & brilliance.
-
- i bought the cal audio and was so annoyed by nad's performance (if they
- make this poor a cd machine, can they do anything right?) that i didn't
- buy any of their stuff.
