- Okay, I am in the middle of setting this up.
-
- 1/ Find an internet provider. John Houlker at Waikato University
- is probably a good start. Michael Newbury at Victoria uni. is
- another. Both can do dial-up internet access.
-
- 2/ Decide whether you just need mail, need FTP too. etc. Your
- internet provider will be able to tell you what options at what
- cost. It will depend on where you are getting the feed too.
- Basic options:
- a/ simplist option is dialup account on host machine. You will
- have to use Kermit or similar to move stuff back to your machine.
- b/ Mail only requirements can be achieved with with a mailbox
- on the host machine and either a UUCP connection or POP2/3 on
- your local machine.
- c/ Full connection will need dialup SLIP or PPP on your machine
- plus a mailbox on host and some means of triggering the transfer.
-
- I have found both Michael and John very helpful. What is possible for
- you will depend on the provider too. A bewildering array of software
- is available for the local end of things. I may be able to summerise
- what you can do for a MSDOS machine in a few weeks and certainly give
- some hints now if you have sorted out the provider end.
