  14. I am compiling information regarding the historical distribution of 
  15. Atlantic salmon in Lake Ontario (Prior to 1900).  Atlantic salmon 
  16. were once very abundant in Lake Ontario, but were extirpated about 1890
  17. through a combination of dam construction, deforestation, over-fishing,
  18. and water pollution.

  20. Our group here at SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry has
  21. recently initiated a research program for restoration of Atlantic salmon
  22. to New York tributaries of Lake Ontario.  As part of this project,
  23. historical records and literature are being searched in an attempt to
  24. describe as accurately as possible the historical distribution of salmon
  25. in these tribs.

  27. Any information, in the form of diary entries, old photographs, oral
  28. tradition, local history books, or any other source would be most helpful
  29. and greatly appreciated.  This information will eventually be incorporated
  30. into a graduate thesis, and all sources will receive acknowledgement.
