  33. This is newsreader-dependent. trn notices the subject change but

  41. Usually the last part (or identifier as you indicate) is enough to
  42. determine which thread a particular posting belongs to but the
  43. availability of additional identifiers is advantageous when the
  44. previous posting hasn't yet arrived at a site or is cancelled etc. But
  45. that is entirely newsreader-dependent.

  47. Try following the way trn and GNUS thread. That should explain
  48. everything about the functions of Message-ID and References headers.
  49. Experiment on a local test newsgroup with either of the newsreaders.
