- I suppose I should have more sense than to post this story, but ...
-
- I've commuted 150+ miles round trip daily for more years
- that I care to admit to, and routinely drive in the left
- lane with the cruise control set to 75 mph. I have followed
- cops cruising at 75+ mph many, many times, though from
- a respectful 1/2 mile distance, and only once had any problem.
-
- The cop pulled over into the breakdown lane, waited for me
- to pass him (now doing 60, since it was clear what was coming)
- and pulled me over. He started to give me some crap, I politely
- pointed out that he didn't have his lights on, didn't appear to
- be following anybody, and I was just keeping a very safe distance
- behind him and not paying much attention to the absolute speed.
- I got off with a written warning.
-
- I think this shows that being polite and deferential (not to
- mention being clean-cut, short-haired and driving a sedan) helps
- a lot, 9 times out of 10. Sure, I fully admit to being foolish,
- pushing my luck, and being a habitual speeder. My car is registered
- in NH, tickets at that time were a uniform $50, and didn't get
- reflected in my insurance. Driving a little too fast saved me
- roughly 20 minutes _one_way_ each day. Yes, I'm aware of what
- this says about my brains and personality; flames to /dev/null,
- please.
-
- Of course, I've also been reamed ragged by a 6' 5" state cop
- weighing in at 275+ lbs, and seriously feared for my physical
- well-being after driving blithely through a radar trap.
- The polite and deferential routine doesn't always work.
-
- (NB: I live in Cambridge now, and hardly ever use my car).
