- We bought a house this summer equipped with an alarm system from
- American Alarm. At first, this seemed fortuitous. Now we realize the
- system is a money pit, and the company specializes in ripoffs. Not
- only do we pay them a large monthly fee so that they'll call the
- police in the unlikely event that someone tries to break in, we have
- been billed for an endless stream of service calls. First they want
- money to set up an account and introduce us to the system. Then they
- want money to check out the cause of a false smoke alarm. Next they
- want money to clean the smoke alarms (the cause of the false alarm).
- Last night, our alarm went off at midnight. The company employee who
- works at the switchboard couldn't answer any of our questions; instead
- he sent out a service rep today. The service rep explained what had
- happened, replaced the battery, worn down by the false alarm, and
- charged us $80 ($30 for the battery, $30 for labor, $20 as a "trip"
- fee, despite the fact that the alarm company office is at the end of
- our block).
-
- Any advice from alarm owners out there?
