- Oh, I dunno, I was riding in a BU police car once (I was a witness to
- a crime there and this was the court date and we were just going out
- to lunch, the crime occured months before) and they used their top
- lights to cut through traffic to get to the diner, totally unnecessary
- and very obnoxious in my opinion. I think the police should provide
- some model of behavior, if they think it's ok to bend the rules to
- avoid the little annoyances of life why shouldn't everyone? Granted
- these were BU police...but I think it's a common attitude.
-
- I worked for 3 years with the Boston Fire Dept and they were
- scrupulous about this kind of thing, in my experience they *never*
- pulled that kind of shenanigan.
-
- They do take fire engines to get lunch but that is because if a call
- comes in they can take off from wherever they happen to be, there are
- no extra shift people to go get lunch for them. The whole engine crew
- rides to get lunch (sometimes they can spare someone, this isn't
- universal, but if there's only a bare crew on shift.) I think that's
- fine tho I suppose the public might misunderstand.
-
- The only time it was even a close call with the BFD was once I was
- being driven back to my office in a wagon and there was a horrible
- traffic jam on Huntington we got stuck in, after about 90 minutes
- (literally) of getting nowhere the driver made a comment about the
- wagon being needed on the next shift (particularly the oxygen tanks in
- the back) and used his lights to go down the trolley tracks. Sort
- amusing, and probably justified, in the fire dept equipment is
- everything.
-
- That's why they'll also use their lights to get back to the house fast
- after a fire, often supplies and hoses need to be replenished before
- another call comes in.
