- The Minnesota Regional Network Corporation (MRNet) is currently seeking an
- experienced Network Engineer to fill a permanent full-time position.
-
- MRNet is a non-profit, tax-exempt corporation established for the purpose of
- enhancing the academic, research and economic environment of the state
- through
- the use of computer networks. MRNet presently provides access to the national
- Internet for colleges, universities, schools, libraries, government agencies
- and businesses. Additionally, we will be developing expanded user services
- and
- educational programs for the use of wide-area networks in education and
- business.

- Required knowledge and experience:
- - All IP protocols, associated applications and their use,
- - routers, bridges and terminal servers administration and operation,
- preferably with those of Cisco Systems,
- - Unix system administration, preferably with Sun Microsystems Sparc
- workstations,
- - telephone digital data services (DS0 and DS1).

- Desirable knowledge and experience:
- - OSI protocols,
- - DOS PCs and Novell networks,
- - Digital VAX systems,
- - Macintosh and Appletalk networks,
- - fast-packet or cell-switching technologies.

- Position tasks:
- - administer and operate a wide-area high-performance IP network consisting
- of
- one or more major hubs and 50 or more attached member organizations;
- troubleshoot and correct any problems or errors,
- - administer and oversee the technical operation of a dialup SLIP service,
- - provide for and facilitate new member connections,
- - consult with new members and aid troubleshooting efforts with all
- connections,
- - install and administer a network management system,
- - develop and offer technical educational programs for present and
- prospective
- members' staff,
- - prepare and convene monthly technical meetings for member representatives,
- - represent MRNet at national technical forums such as the IETF,
- - develop plans and programs for the expansion of the network throughout the
- state to schools, libraries, non-profit service agencies, information
- providers,government agencies and businesses,
- - assist the Director in marketing and outreach efforts by providing
- technical
- expertise and assistance in presentations,
- - advise the Director on plans and options with new emerging telephone and
- routing technologies.

- You will be the primary technical officer for MRNet and help set strategy for
- and direct all technical operations. You should have good communications
- skills, be easily able to work with other people and explain complicated
- technical issues to the uninitiated. You must be able to work well with a
- small team of dedicated people working to build a high-quality network
- service
- with enhanced user services and educational programs that will expand network
- access and use throughout Minnesota.
