- Hi folks,
-
- Yet another question on introducing solids. Our daughter Sophia (3 1/2
- to 4 months old) was exhibiting all the classic symptoms of ready for
- solids, a textbook baby. So, armed with an infant feeding set, camera,
- lots of time and even more bibs and washclothes we started her on
- Gerber rice cereal (after checking with her pediatrician of course).
-
- The first couple of days was basically wasted on spoon dynamics, i.e.
- what goes in must come out. Eventually she got the habit of it and ate
- maybe a tablespoon's worth a day. Well, a day after, she started behavijg
- VERY funny, i.e. during the day nurse (formula) constantly every
- hour to 2 hours but taking less than her usual amount, during the night
- sleep for an hour, pop up crying and sleeping (how do they do it?) every
- hour, salivating a lot, biting her hand, and producing lots of gas.
-
- This went on for 3 days and 3 LONG nights. By that time she was taking
- a tablespoon a day and had adjusted to the spoon quite nicely, but during
- the night it was the baby from the alternate universe :-(. After a
- checkup, her doctor said it was not teething (though she matched all
- symptoms), not an ear infection, but simply that we should stop the
- rice cereal, wait a week, and start on simple veggies.
-
- We stopped cereal and Sophia rewarded us with a nice full night of sleep.
- Now she's back on formula and behaves normally. I discussed this with
- the people at the day care center and they said it's possible, while
- my mom guessed it instantly.
-
- All the baby books I read said nothing of gas trouble with rice cereal,
- but mentioned that some people prefer veggies as first solid.
-
- So, net.parents, what's your wisdom? which veggie(s) for first? and
- has this phenomenon happened to you?
-
- Please mail the answer if possible. Thanks!
