- I appreciate the idea that parents stay informed. I think that is very
- important. However, how are children going to learn how to think about
- REAL issues without dealing with the topics in your list? Like nuclear
- war, the role of "moral issues" (we went to war over a few moral issues!),
- trust building (blindfolded walks), joural keeping, organic evolution,
- etc. I guess that your children cannot participate in social-studies
- classes, history lessons in any form, or most types of writing...don't
- reveal any personality! You can't have very interesting reading lessons..
- I guess that you can do some mathematics...
-
- I think many parents who are afraid of having their authority undermined
- distrust teachers and public education. The parents are afraid that
- teachers will encourage children to think for themselves...and possibly
- question their parent's values. I also believe that you should encourage
- the questions, so that children can really adopt the values as their
- own instead of just having them as their tradition.
-
- For example, when I was in high school, I did an awful lot of questioning
- about my parents religion. My mother encouraged it. I learned a lot
- about "my" religion and about the rest of the world....and my faith is
- very strong having undergone that testing.
