- The cord around the neck senarrio (sp?) is the best example of the scare
- tactics that many use to defend a hospital birth only mentallity. The
- truth is that most "emergancys" are nothing but things to watch out for
- in any birth. When I took EMT training we were taught how to handle situations
- such as cord around the neck (which by the way is handled by simply sliding a finger
- under the cord to make sure it is loose so the baby doesnt choke and if it
- is too tight you simply cut the cord before the baby is fully birthed) just
- as lay midwifes are trained. Any emergancy that would come up that the
- midwife could not handle would be of a type that would easily be able to
- be transported (ie placenta previa - the placenta being over the cervix
- thus preventing the baby from desending down the canal) and even more
- importantly in most cases the midwife would be able to determine that
- well ahead of time. (again in the case of placenta previa the midwifes
- skills tend to be so good that they can usually tell exactly where the
- placenta is attached to the uterus even - and without an ultrasound or other
- type of high tech diagnostic tool)
-
- And I again want to stress that if you are not comfortable with home
- birth that is fine and there are some very nice and inovative hospitals
- around.
