- I am expecting my second child in May and am trying to decide what to do
- about continuing Day Care for my first 2.5 yr old daughter while on
- maternity leave (3 months). I would like to take her out of Day Care and
- spend the time with her and the new baby. I've been told by the Day Care
- center director and others that this may negatively affect her, since she's
- used to going to Day Care now 3 days a week. Anyone have any
- advice/experience they'd like to share? Thanks in advance.
-
- The daycare people may have the best of intentions, but I think they
- are misguided. As cynical as this may sound, your taking your daughter
- out of their hands may decrease their income, and you should take that
- into consideration when evaluating their advice.
-
- Keeping your daughter in daycare while staying home with the new baby
- can easily generate intense sibling rivalry. Of course how you handle
- the situation has a lot to do with how your daughter feels about it.
-
- If she has friends in daycare that she would miss, you might want to
- take that into consideration. You need to make sure that she continues
- her social connections somehow and that you spend some one on one time
- with your daughter on a regular basis after your new baby is born.
-
- One possible solution might be to plan to take her out of daycare
- while retaining the option of putting her back in. If your daughter
- gives you signs that she's missing the daycare, you can always bring
- her back for 1 or 2 days a week, and it will have been her choice to
- go back. She'll know by then that you are going to be available to her
- as well as the new baby and it won't be an issue.
-
- Good luck.
