- I'll second Lisa Lewis - rare counterexamples nonwithstanding (and these are
- often kids with lots of older siblings), any kid not talking by 3 needs to be
- evaluated IMMEDIATELY! For those of you who don't already know, here's where
- I come from: PhD Linguistics, so I know the data (:-)), 3 year old child with
- hearing impairment, so I've lived it and know many other kids with related
- problems (:-(). The AVERAGE age for a DEAF child to be diagnosed is 18
- months!! Pediatricians often "test" by clapping behind kids, etc. Even
- pretty deaf kids can sense the vibrations from that. THATS HOW THEY DON'T GET
- TESTED EARLY ENOUGH!! This kid is frustrated, and needs a way to communicate!
-
- I too live in Boston, so I'm emailing specific info on people to see, etc. to
- Emilie. Please let me know if anyone else wants that info. Even if you're
- ever just worried about your kids' speech/language/hearing, feel free to email
- me for info, etc.
-
- I know some about other language disorders (processing, aphasias, etc) but
- have less personal experience. However, I do know exactly who to contact in
- this town, and I do have a sense for what is normal and what is worth checking
- out. Also, parents know their kids best. In this case, I'd bet they know
- there's a problem, or they'd accept what the doctor said. Trust your
- instincts first!!
