-
- LTV was one of the very early companies to jump in on the
- "conglomerate" craze, set earlier by ITT.
-
- The idea of a conglomerate was to buy a whole bunch of unrelated
- businesses, and operate them under the corporate name. It didn't
- work for ITT and it didn't work in spectacurlarly bad ways for LTV,
- nee Ling Tempco Voit, who manufactured steel and basketballs and was
- a major government contractor to boot. They have sold off many
- divisions to generate cash.
