  18. The NT introduction is a real crap shoot.  It does have a lot of press
  19. and public momentum, but there are potential problems - MSFT hasn't
  20. clearly defined NT's market.  Many users think it's for them, but MS
  21. says often that it's for the server and high-end machines.  The
  22. public's expectations may be too high.  Like MS's WorkGroups program,
  23. which is off to a slow start due to confusion over the product's
  24. target audience, NT may fall into the same rut.  Of course MS is
  25. preparing other Windows OSes for "the other machines" and this may
  26. help them keep the market.  With Novell's purchase of UNIX and IBM's
  27. commitment to OS/2 (and its gaining popularity), there is a good
  28. chance that we will see multiple OSes dominating, as opposed to MS's
  29. past monopoly of operating systems for the Intel platform.
  30.     I get a feeling that MS will become another Lotus - it will
  31. still be a big player, but not the only one.  The market will go in
  32. different directions, supporting different products.  As for
  33. investments, I think MS will continue to be a good investment; after
  34. all, operating systems are not their only market.
