- Does anyone know what the performance is for major exchange stocks whose price
- has fallen below a dollar? (I'm not speaking of "penny" stocks, but rather
- NYSE, AMEX, and NASDAQ stocks that at one time traded above 5, but for one
- reason or another have fallen down to prices like 1/2 or 11/16).
-
- Although I realize that many of these stocks belong to corporations on the
- skids, and quite often they eventually go belly up leaving the stockholder
- with zip, there are certainly plenty of comeback stories. It has occurred
- to me that a single stock bought at 1/2 which returns to 10 would more than
- compensate for the losses, including commissions, for a dozen stocks bought at
- 1/2 which go to 0 (assuming the same number of shares for all). But I don't
- know how common such stock rises are, or if any net gains from them are
- typically short-term enough or large enough to beat the market in general.
-
- What I'm thinking of trying is to buy up, say, 20 dollar fraction stocks of
- companies which have a fighting chance of survival (not in bankruptcy, some
- cash position, diversity of products or markets), hoping that a few will do
- well enough in the next couple of years to greatly offset those that don't make
- it. Has anyone tried or researched this strategy?
-
- I suppose there's some danger of reverse splits causing me to hold odd lots.
- At prices under a dollar, though, I'd probably want to buy at least 1000 shares
- per company, just because of the commission hit. I'm assuming reverse splits
- of greater than 1 for 10 are unusual enough to be discountable -- is this a
- valid premise?
-
- The other item I'd be worried about is thin trading, an attribute of many small
- price stocks. How seriously need I concern myself about it?
-
- Thanks,
-
