- :I am looking to invest a little money in the stock market. But I've never done
- :it before nor do I have a clue as to what I need to do. I went to my local
- :library and took out a few books I found on the subject, and the talk goes
- over
- :my head on page 1 or 2 with terms I've never heard of.
-
- :Does anyone have any ideas on where somebody starts in the stock market? I use
- :GEnie, and asked for an online Schwab application. When I got the application,
- :the first thing it says is:
-
- :"Do you want a brokerage account only"
-
- :or
-
- :"Brokerage account with margin trading feature"
-
- :I can't even fill out the first question of the application! Any help would be
- :appreciated. Literature, etc.
-
- :Thanks

- The thing I think I would do in your place is to:
- 1. Open a 'normal' Schwabb account at the local Schwabb office.
- 2. Ask for the Mutual fund guide (they provide it free).
- 3. Spend a few hours on a weekend with the survey of the listed mutual
- funds and itemize the most important features. (Select the TYPE of
- fund you are intrested in).
- 4. Select a few funds that follow the investment strategy you have
- selected in step 3. (Growth, Bond funds etc)
- 5. Invest some volume of $$ based on the individual funds you select.
- (You may find some comfort in selecting funds that Schwabb offers
- with no load [commission] and provision for xfer to other funds
- with the same provision.)
-
- In that method, you need not spend time from every day following your
- investment. (I don't have all that much invested and I STILL follow them every
- day. Sometimes I feel like THEY own ME rather than the other way around...)
