- Everyone but Novell. If this deal happens, Unix is dead as an
- operating system. Check Novells' pricing on NetWare, versus
- the functionality it provides. Then look at how much more Unix
- can do, versus the price of even the expensive versions like
- SCO. Look at the projected cost of Unixware ($500/single user,
- $2500/"server") which is a gutted product (no compiler, no
- documentation package, no man pages) with nothing but IPX
- *client* features added (i.e., someone with Unixware can log
- into a NetWare server and map drives on it, but the Unixware
- filesystem is *not* accessable over the net). NetWare 3.11
- 100-user version retails for $6995, and basically emulates
- a disc drive and print buffer, with a few TSRs (NLMs) that
- have added some extra features. Currently, Dell Unix SysVr4
- with *everything* that's normally optional is $1600. Which
- way do *you* think Unix pricing is going?
-
- And for those thinking it might result in less litigation,
- dream on. Novell has in the past sued (and won) business that
- had a dealer set up a network, and who paid the dealer for
- the software--but the dealer was only using one package, and
- installing it in several places, charging each of them the
- full price! Instead of stepping on the dealer, they went after
- the customer (to the tune of a $20K judgement in at least one
- case of a small company). Novell is no more adverse to suing
- people than AT&T/USL.
-
- I think Novell is destroying a competitor. I've heard all
- the promises before ("we'll continue, we'll support, we won't
- abandon existing customers, we'll maintain compatability, etc.),
- and don't trust them.
-
- Incidentally, we use both Unix and NetWare at work. I prefer
- Unix, unfortunantly nobody has generated a add-on for Unix
- that integrates Dos systems as easily as NetWare. If USL had
- spent some effort towards such a feature, they'd have over
- half the PC-LAN market, easily. They find it easier to file
- lawsuits.
