- Trying to buy has become will buy - the deal's as good as done. I
- think it's a fascinating move by Novell (at $350 million) that puts
- their strategy cards right on the table: they think they can take
- Microsoft on for the heart and soul of the desktop world. By buying
- USL they will be able to take the huge installed base of Unix systems
- in the midrange and workstation world and maybe, just maybe, finally
- be the ones to come up with a viable Unix strategy for the mass
- market.
-
- What all of this mean for Novell's previous purchase of Digital
- Research I'm not sure. I, for one, thought that Novell looked to
- DR-DOS as their stepping-stone to bridging their networking world with
- MS's O/S business, but that now appears to be open to some question.
- Not having seen any press release o or other P.R. hack stuff on the
- deal I don't know how Novell is positioning the USL purchase but I
- hope that they don't become too entranced with running two horses in
- this race.
-
- The upshot? I think it's an interesting, risky, and ultimately
- necessary move for Novell if they truly want to take on MS for the O/S
- desktop. I think Unix just became a more viable option than it has
- ever been before, certainly as far as the broader mass market is
- concerned.
