  20. My understanding of AMD's legal woes is that they were prevented
  21. from using Intel's microcode in their (AMD's) next generation of
  22. Intel-clone microprocessors. More specifically, their next generation
  23. is to be a 486-clone so that product has been pushed out until next
  24. spring/summer.

  26. The good news? I think that spring/summer introduction of a a 486
  27. clone product is still in lots of time to claim considerable
  28. market share (assuming its price/performance is more than respectable
  29. in comparison to Intel) from Intel, like its 386 chips already have.
  30. They are also in position, accoring to a recent Business Week article,
  31. to ship two more generations of Intel clone chips in rapid succession,
  32. perhaps even leap-frogging Intel which presents some interesting
  33. possibilities.

  35. The badnews? As Intel found when shippig their 486-50, current chip
  36. designs are really pushing the edge of current chip design techniques
  37. and are requiring some kludges (like heat sinks etc.) to run
  38. reasonably. AMD is likely to have both more and less problems than
  39. Intel as they try and explore thesame territory but without Intel's
  40. experience and with their hands tied somewhat in having another
  41. manufacturer's design to build to.

  43. After all this blather what do I think? I think they're a good twelve
  44. month buy. I think the market is going to be all over this stock like
  45. a dirty shirt in the next quarter or so and this may not be a bad time
  46. to think about AMD.
