  11. Hi, Chris. I recently got caught up in a discussion of Amy in another
  12. conf, basically addressing the issue of what difference it makes if
  13. Joey -did- have a relationship with her; my thesis is it makes a
  14. big difference, particularly if she was sexually abused by her father,
  15. as she's indicated she was (thugh she won't discuss details).

  19. I've been following the Amy Fisher story for a while; it's
  20. amazing how folks get riled up by her - most people seem
  21. to think she's a spoiled-selfish slut and deserves what
  22. she's got.

  24. But it seems to me that being spoiled, selfish or a slut
  25. is -not criminal.- And Amy, like many of the women who make
  26. their livings in the sex industry, claims to have been
  27. abused by her father -- and that makes for an interesting
  28. psychodrama in terms of Joey Buttafuoco and his wife (her
  29. vctim), Mary Jo, as proxies for her real parents. (Amy
  30. claims she had a sexual relationship with Joey; he denies
  31. it.)

  33. If I may elaborate and speculate just a bit, and indulge myself
  34. in what some others may term "psychobabble" --
  35.  
  36. Let's say that Amy's father -was- sexually abusive, in a way
  37. that stopped somewhere short of actual intercourse, but
  38. abusive enough to confuse and repel her, and place her "in
  39. competition" with her mother. At 16, she meets Joey Buttafuoco,
  40. who replaces her father - and in shooting Mary Jo, Amy is
  41. effectively "shooting" her sexual-rival mother.

  43. In this context, Amy's act makes a certain amount of twisted
  44. sense. It doesn't excuse the act, but IMHO, especially
  45. considering that she is a minor, it expands the culpability
  46. to other parties, Joey Buttafuoco in particular.

  48. This is entirely dependent on whether Amy is being truthful
  49. about her relationship with Joey. And I am inclined to believe
  50. her - the idea that she just went nutso over the lardy Italian,
  51. with no encouragement from him, and then took it upon herself
  52. to shoot his wife seems incomprehensible, particularly since
  53. she has no history of being obssessive (as did Caroline
  54. Warmus) or violent.
