- ----------------------- Original Message --------------------
-
- Our campus is currently exploring distance education avenues. As the
- librarian on a campus-wide committee, I am concerned about how we will
- meet the needs of students who would participate in courses delivered in
- this way.
-
- I would like to receive responses from librarians/staff who are directly
- involved in serving students taught through distance education. I am
- looking for participants from ACTUAL settings.
-
- ** Disclaimer: All responses will be kept confidential. I am not a
- student nor is this research for publication/presentation.
-
- Thank you for your assistance in responding. While none of us have
- "free time," your contributions are greatly appreciated.
-
- ---------------------- Questionnaire Begins Here ---------------------
-
- 1. How long has your institution offered courses through distance
- education, number of participants (est.), & what disciplines (e.g.
- English, Education, Business, etc.) ?
-
- 2. Do you offer students access to indexes via dial-in CD-ROM or
- mainframe-mounted tapes ?
-
- 3. Generally, what library services do you offer to D.E. students
- (separate from #2) ?
-
- 4a. Are there any special services/accommodations that you make for D.E.
- students that more "traditional" patrons do not receive (e.g.
- utilizing fax instead of surface mail for document delivery) ?
-
- 4b. Do you charge patrons anything extra to recover costs for these
- special services (& how much) ?
-
- 5. Whether you offer special services or not, did you need to add extra
- staff (any level) &/or increase your budget to accommodate special
- requirements of D.E. students ?
-
- 6. Do you conduct any form of LI/BI with distance education students,
- and if so, what methods are used (e.g., as part of students visiting
- campus to meet with instructor, library schedules 1-hour BI session) ?
-
- Thank you for your time and effort. If anyone wishes an annonymous
- summary of the responses, please attach note. I will respond in mid-
- February.
-
- Mike Strahan.
