- This used to happen to me quite frequently, especially when using
- a new exercise format such as a LifeStep or exercise bike. I too
- never had a problem with it, and felt like I wasn't getting
- adequate exercise with a heartrate in the 150s-160s. However,
- I think that the underlying quality of your coronary arteries
- is important to consider if you want to continue to stress
- yourself beyond what the charts say you should be doing.
-
- Since few of us really know the quality of our coronary arteries,
- I would suggest using as surrogate criteria such as age, family
- history, smoking, sex, and diabetes. For example:
-
- 25 year/old woman, nonsmoker, no family history of heart
- disease, no diabetes: go as high as you want!
-
- 55 year/old man, dad died at 60 of heart attack: better stay
- within your target range, old timer :-)
-
- In my case, it is really difficult now for me to get my HR
- over 170 now, and it rarely stays up for long. That is because
- I do the same exercises year after year, and can't set the
- machines up any higher (already at top setting) :-).
