- THe mentioning of internet with NO billboards is lacking.
- Think of this.. Most machines get logged in to many times a day. Some
- 100+ different college kids log into our main UNIX here at NMSU each
- school day. This makes me think of the $$ that could be made by
- selling MOTD advertising. In the message of the day, one could put an
- advertisement for the people logging in to see. THis would be text,
- but it doesn't mean that a graphical representation couldn't be
- placed. This of all the Xterminals in your Cluster/Pod/classroom
- displaying a large advertisement. As for the MOTD, it would be easy to
- even add in a coupon where the person wanting to use it would only
- have to do a screen dump and use. The statistics on how many people
- see this would be easy. How many logins from different people each
- day.! THe charge, well, I would guess bout $5 a day for one
- advertisement on a machine that gets decent trafic. (Its $5 for your
- pocket complete profit, though you might have to type/scan in an
- advertisement and gemacs it into the /etc/motd..) one could even
- charge a company for advertising and append it to their .signature and
- post.
- $$$$... Intenet is full of money making opertunities. THough of course
- there are some out there who don't want to see advertising in the
- MOTD. I mean everytime you read a .sig there is usually some type of
- advertising. ex. This opinion if my own and not from XXXX.. As
- entrepeneurs, we need to break those barriers and get advertising in.
- I think in the future, the net will be commercial. Think of having a
- contract with the large university and public machines and giving the
- university/public machine owners $1 per day, well you could make $5.'
- What would be the correct amount to charge? (I guess it would depend
- on what was advertised. Food, coupons and only a few bucks. But on a
- hightech machine advertising some hightech like thing, $$$$ mucho
- more!)
- Just a though for the entrepeneur in us all!
