- I received the book _The Republic of Tea: How an Idea Becomes a Business_
- by Mel Ziegler, Bill Rosenzweig and Patricia Ziegler (Published by
- Doubleday, list price $22.50) as a Christmas gift. Mel & Pat Ziegler were
- founders of Banana Republic. The book consists mostly of conversations
- between Ziegler and Rosenzweig (by fax) in planning a business partnership
- to sell tea. It includes the business plan that they eventually came up
- with, the evolution of package design, and the design for the entire
- structure of their business.
-
- They talk a lot in the book about their goal of not just selling tea, but
- of selling a slower lifestyle, of tea sipping rather than coffee gulping.
-
- After finishing the book (according to the book, their business was
- finally incorporated in January 1992 and the first product shipped in
- May), I was so inspired and curious, I went to my local upscale yuppie
- market to see whether The Republic of Tea had made it to the shelves, and
- it had, with packaging essentially the same as presented in the book.
-
- Anyway, for aspiring business-planners, it's worthwhile reading.
