- Yes. If Sparky has cracks in the flue he should have them
- repaired before burning anything in the fireplace. Not only
- will a breach in the integrity of the flue lining cause heat
- to escape, but also carbon monoxide and other toxic and/or
- dangerous gases will escape into the living area. At least I'd
- buy one of those CO monitors seen on TV (looks like a fuzzy
- button, changes color when exposed to CO) and put it in rooms
- adjacent to the chimney.
- I'm a professional firefighter, so believe me when I say this
- is a serious problem.
- (BTW, creosote doesn't build up in cracks, it sort of condenses
- on the walls of the chimney. It does leak out the cracks, tho.)
