  21.   At one time I investigated investigating :-)  This was for one of those
  22.   "track down the missing heir type businesses".  I had noted that in 
  23.   Texas bank accounts which went dormant were just listed in the newspaper
  24.   about once a year - and that was all the banks did to try to locate
  25.   someone before the funds were turned over to the state.

  27.   Anyway, it appeared the easiest way to trace someone (ESPECIALLY if you
  28.   have their ssn - which is the reason I don't give it to anybody who
  29.   doesn't have a valid reason to know it) is to join a credit reporting
  30.   service (TRW, etc).  I called the major agencies, and they said that
  31.   I had to have a signed form giving me permission to get someone's 
  32.   credit report, but it seemed very laxly enforced (at least 5 years 
  33.   ago when I looked at this).  I got the distinct impression that if
  34.   I told 'em over the phone I had a release form, they'd send out a 
  35.   credit report post haste...Since I never followed up on it, I 
  36.   don't know what the situation would be at this point...
